How to Search and Use the Site
This guide will help you quickly find the registers you are looking for and make full use of all the portal’s features.
1. Searching and Autocomplete
The main search field searches simultaneously through register creators (parishes, deaneries, district offices) as well as all municipalities and villages that belonged to the given parish.
Useful search tips:
- Without diacritics: You do not need to write Czech accents. The query
tisnovwill reliably find Tišnov. - Autocomplete: As soon as you start typing, the search box will suggest existing places. Selecting from the list ensures accurate results.
- Quick filters: In the right part of the search panel, you can refine your search by archive, denomination (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Civil), year range, and record type (N = Births, O = Marriages, Z = Deaths, or alphabetical Indexes).
2. Using the Interactive Map
The map displays the seats of the parishes and register creators:
- Circle size corresponds to the number of registers stored for the given seat (the larger the circle, the more books).
- Circle color indicates the respective regional archive (e.g., Moravian Land Archives in Brno, State Regional Archives in Zámrsk, etc.).
- Clicking a point: Clicking a marker displays an overview of all villages belonging to this parish and a link to list all its registers directly.
3. Viewing Registers (Local Viewer)
For selected registers (e.g., from Brno or Zámrsk), we offer the option to browse scans directly on our website via the místně (locally) link. Our viewer is optimized for fast loading and supports keyboard shortcuts:
Keyboard shortcuts in the viewer:
- Space or Right Arrow: Next page
- Backspace or Left Arrow: Previous page
- Mouse wheel / Double-click: Zoom in and out
- Mouse drag: Pan zoomed image
In the top bar of the viewer, you will also find buttons to rotate the image, adjust contrast (great for faded ink), download the current image in full resolution, and copy a direct link to a specific page of the book.
